Two years in a row now, my friends have gathered in people's homes to surprise my favorite composer, Erik Satie, on the occasion of his birthday. On May 17 this year, he turned 151. Each time we've shared cake, laughter, and his music!

The event has an improvisatory spirit to it. It's organized on a spur-of-the-moment basis with less than two weeks notice. In a matter of days, the dedicated performers learn new pieces, create new interpretations, and discover new sides and shades of Satie's unique, riotous, and ridiculous personality.

I'm proud to admit that this year, in addition to performing as visibilities and with my good friend Clara Zornado as Les Anges, I discovered that Satie only ate foods that were white. To cater to his dietary needs, I prepared a spread of cauliflower and turnips with ranch dressing, cucumber sandwiches (with peeled cucumbers), white frosted pound cake, sharp cheddar cheese and rice crackers, smartfood, wint-o-green lifesavers, and an ice-cream sundae bar with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, white chocolate chips, white fudge sauce, and silver cake gems.
